Part 1: Explaining International Migration

In Part 1 of the class, we begin by exploring the phenomenon of international migration. Why do people decide to move? What are the main sociological theories that attempt to explain why people move? How is the movement of people different or similar to past movements?

Readings in this section also address how the world came to be divided into our current construction of nations with borders and what that means for people moving from one place to another.
